Visual Literature

Visual Literature brings together works in which images are essential to the narrative, interpretation, or literary experience. The collection encompasses graphic novels, graphic adaptations, comics, manga, sequential art, wordless novels, woodcut and wood-engraving novels, picture narratives, and experimental forms of visual storytelling. Unlike Illustrated Classics, in which illustrations accompany and enhance a primarily textual work, Visual Literature treats images as part of the work's narrative language. The collection therefore connects the historical traditions of the woodcut and wordless novel with modern comics, manga, graphic novels, and experimental visual interpretations of literature.
