A water spirit raised by a fisherman marries the knight Huldbrand and thereby gains a human soul, but their bond is threatened by his attraction to Bertalda and by the elemental powers embodied in Kühleborn. Fouqué makes the conditional supernatural marriage both romance and tragedy: changes in weather, water, and landscape track unstable loyalties, while Undine’s innocence contrasts with the courtly world she enters.
