E. T. A. Hoffmann's novella "The Nutcracker and the Mouse-King" is a German Romantic tale about a young girl's Christmas Eve adventure with a magical nutcracker. It is widely known as the basis for Tchaikovsky's famous ballet, making it a cornerstone of holiday tradition.
