The twelfth-century poet who invented Arthurian romance as we know it: these four tales — Erec and Enide, Cligès, Yvain, and Lancelot — gave literature the Knight of the Cart, the lion-companion, and the court of Camelot in full flower. Nearly every later fantasy of knights, quests, and enchanted castles descends from Chrétien's verse.
